Without bees, these crops would produce significantly less fruit, or none at all. Our supermarkets would have far fewer choices, and our diets would become drastically less varied and nutritious. The simple act of a bee moving from flower to flower is a cornerstone of global food security.


2. It’s Not Just About Honey Bees

When most people think of a bee, they picture the European honey bee. While honey bees are crucial for large-scale agriculture, they are just one species out of more than 20,000 known bee species worldwide! The vast majority of these are native, wild bees, such as bumblebees, mason bees, leafcutter bees, and sweat bees. These unsung heroes are often more effective pollinators for specific native plants and crops than honey bees are. For example, the fuzzy bumblebee is a master of “buzz pollination,” a special technique needed to pollinate plants like tomatoes, peppers, and blueberries. Different bees have different body sizes, tongue lengths, and behaviours, making them uniquely suited to pollinate different types of flowers. This incredible diversity is a vital insurance policy for our planet.


3. They Are the Guardians of Biodiversity

The importance of bees extends far beyond our farms and into wild ecosystems. They are a keystone species, meaning they help hold the entire ecosystem together. Bees pollinate countless species of wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. In turn, these plants:

  • Provide food for a huge range of other animals (in the form of berries, seeds, and leaves).
  • Create habitats for insects, birds, and mammals.
  • Stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.

The connection between bees and human nutrition is incredibly direct. Many of the most colourful and nutrient-dense foods we are encouraged to eat are pollinator-dependent. Think of the foods packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants:

  • Tree Fruits: Apples, pears, peaches, plums.

  • Beeswax: Secreted by worker bees to build their honeycomb, beeswax is used in everything from candles and cosmetics to food wraps and pharmaceuticals.
  • Propolis: A resinous mixture that bees produce to seal their hives, propolis has natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and is used in many health supplements.
  • Royal Jelly: A special food fed to queen bees, it is harvested for use in dietary supplements and skincare products.
  • Pollen: Collected by bees as a protein source, bee pollen is often consumed by humans as a nutritional supplement.

These products further highlight the resourcefulness of honey bees and their unique contributions to human well-being.


8. They Support the Entire Food Web

The work of bees is a gift that keeps on giving, rippling up through the entire food web. By pollinating plants, bees ensure the production of the seeds, nuts, and berries that are a primary food source for a huge variety of wildlife. Many species of birds, from songbirds to game birds, rely on these fruits and seeds for their survival, especially during winter. Small mammals like squirrels, chipmunks, and mice also depend on this bee-created bounty. Even large mammals like bears rely heavily on berries to fatten up for hibernation. Certain flowers, like those of tomatoes, blueberries, and eggplants, hold their pollen very tightly within their anthers. A honey bee can’t get it out.

However, a bumblebee can! By grabbing onto the flower and rapidly vibrating its flight muscles (at a frequency similar to the musical note C), it creates powerful vibrations that shake the pollen loose, causing it to rain down onto the bee’s fuzzy body. This highly specialized technique showcases how some plants are completely dependent on specific types of bees for their reproduction, highlighting the irreplaceable role of bee diversity.


10. They Are in Critical Danger and Need Our Help

Despite their vital importance, bee populations around the world are in serious decline. They face a combination of threats often referred to as the “four P’s”:

  1. Pesticides: Certain pesticides, particularly neonicotinoids, can be lethal to bees and impair their navigation and foraging abilities.
  2. Parasites and Pathogens: Mites like the Varroa destructor weaken honey bee colonies, while various diseases can spread rapidly.
  3. Poor Nutrition: Large-scale monoculture farming and the loss of wildflower meadows mean there is less diverse forage available for bees.
  4. Place (Habitat Loss): Urban development and intensive agriculture have destroyed the natural habitats bees need to nest and find food.

The good news is that we can all be part of the solution. Simple actions like planting native, pollinator-friendly flowers, avoiding the use of pesticides in our gardens, and supporting local, sustainable agriculture can make a real difference in helping to save our buzzing friends.
