1. The Mastery of Iron: Forging the First Empires

Before the advent of iron, civilisations waged war with bronze, a metal that was effective but also expensive and relatively soft. The Bronze Age Collapse around 1200 BCE gave way to a new era defined by a stronger, more abundant, and far more lethal material: iron. The Hittites are often credited as among the first to master ironworking, and this technological superiority gave them a decisive edge. Iron weapons—swords, spearheads, and arrowheads—could shatter bronze equivalents, were more durable, and could hold a sharper edge. Crucially, iron ore was far more common than the copper and tin needed for bronze. This democratised warfare. Stone walls that had stood for centuries could be reduced to rubble in a matter of hours. This fundamentally shifted the balance of power from feudal lords to central monarchs who could afford the expensive new artillery. The gunpowder revolution also transformed infantry combat with the advent of firearms like the arquebus and musket. Though slow and inaccurate at first, these weapons required less training than a longbow and could pierce any armour.
